    a few FCU ideas

    Hi
love the new FCU features but came up with a few of my own you might like

    memory slots:
the ability to save multiple FCU configs for different uppers, or different gametypes, RoF speeds etc

    Wireless:
    hear me out,
ditch the lcd in favor of a bluetooth interface and only see the FCU when you take out the battery to charge it, or since you won't need the control stick, completely encase the FCU in Epoxy, and have it shockproof/water proof
then a tablet, or smartphone app

    probably not do-able
    built in charger?
like maybe an AC port with small wall wart like some high end flashlights?

Memory slots would be amazing, even if it was just three buttons, one for each config.

Wireless, cool but not worth the cost IMO.

I like the ability to swap out batteries, same as with a flashlight and a red dot, so you can carry extras in the field, in long events, or in case something happens.

Yea, memory slots would be pretty sweet... Somebody asks "Hey, what's that thing capable of?" Just switch over to your 70rps setting and show 'em

Wireless has been asked before, and I don't 100% remember the reasons people were giving... I think they were just saying that it would add to its cost, and would also leave it exposed to people hacking into it and making changes without you knowing.

And @xpegsniper1: I think he was just meaning have the ability to charge an attached battery. I don't think he means making it a built-in one, I think he just thinks it would be nice to be able to not worry about a charger.

If you did it with a very short range communication like blue tooth, and keep it low power, it could work, but it's going to be another battery draw, and what are you using on the other end of it? A a smart phone? That's also more hardware to have or buy for having Bluetooth. Aside from that, Bluetooth is a lot harder than just sending electrical pulses to a solenoid.

You can charge a lipo while it's plugged in if that's what you mean? Just charge it through the balance port.

I'm right there with you as far as the memory slots go. Three would probably be the perfect number, just enough for the needs of most people without being very difficult at all to manufacture. With the wireless, the first thing I noticed upon opening my P* F2000 was the clutter of wires in the stock. The only battery I have at the moment that will fit is my Intellect mini butterfly. I could just get the 9v connector of course, but I like to have options. I don't really follow you on the charger setup, but Xpeg brings up another excellent idea... Have batteries that can be detached and changed similar to a cellphone?

As far as the batteries go, they swap like a phone as it is. Unplug one, plug in the next and keep going. Settings come right back up and you're set. Doesn't get much better than that.

Well yea, but there's still the plethora of wires. I'm saying mod the fcu to support a battery that attaches to the unit like a cellphone battery would, that way you use less wiring. It would be ideal to keep the connector for an external battery so that the player would still have that option though. I agree, the design is awesome as it is, but just an idea.

The problem with that is that you are making things proprietary, as happened with the escort and DG classic guns. This keeps the system far more open and adaptable.

    Two other things.
1)you are running a custom install, so more wiring may have been needed for the fn2000.
2)just to be clear, the wires on the fcu are necessary. The new version uses a harness though so that makes things a lot easier.

I understand that, I was referring to the wires that run to the battery. And the main reason for me not having much space is because even though the amount of wiring is the same, it's all jammed into one area because the FE sits in the rear of the gun.

Gotcha. Yeah, having one of the very few polarized fn2ks has to have some downfall you lucky person :P

Yes memory slots please. Those of us using a single lower with DMR, Shrike, and CQB uppers would love to have memory settings as they change with different barrel and role configurations.

the wireless hardware would probably be cheaper than the LCD, and joystick combo,

I would like to see a case or something around the fcu for two reasons.
    1) ive broken 2 fcu screens
    2) so the little joystick button doesn't get pressed in the middle of a game and i cant shoot.

  16. #16
Either of these should do it... Not sure how you managed to break 2 LCDs... And the fcu isnt usually exposed, or rattling around to hit the joystick, but ok...

Memory slots is the winner here, the rest I wouldn't have any use for.

  18. #18
Memory slots, hands down. Can't agree more. That would be easily worth it for me. I'd pay for that upgrade even in light of the recent v2 upgrade.

  19. #19
How did I miss this thread...memory slots without a doubt. That should've been something on the top of polarstars advancement list.

I just had an idea that might be really cool for the FCU. Make it so you can set open/bolt fire mode dependent on safety position. this way you can get the higher accuracy of closed bolt on semi, while not running into the issue users have been having with full auto on closed bolt as in this thread.

    thoughts?

Wow... thats a really good idea. +1 on that. Have to be able to turn it on and off of course but that's merely a boolean toggle.

I like it! That makes so much more sense.

  23. #23
that combined with memory slots would be pretty awesome, I cant really think of anything else i would want out of the FCU. except maybe a micro usb slot so software upgrades could be downloaded and installed. Wireless i think isnt worth the hardware hassle/power drain. Maybe an I/O port so it could be tied to a modified holo sight, or other device.

Is there any ETA on the next FCU revision?

  25. #25
When i saw the forum title the same thing jumped to my mind which is memory to save and quicklly access saved setups.

    Memory slots are nice

since the new APP Polarized has been released, I thought we might want to re- evaluate the notion of a FCU that gets rid of the 5 way joystick, and the power hungry LCD display. In favor of an inexpensive Bluetooth interface chip? seeing as there is already an APP, integrating it into the system in the next logical step, we all like the idea of "memory slots" for the FCU, now you could store 1000's of configs on your phone, and send them to the gun as needed.

    please discuss

I like that personally. It would eliminate the fcu almost entirely in terms of size in comparison to the current model.

Would you pay $650 per fusion engine, or $200 for the upgrade board if that was the case, along with $5-$10 for the app?

  31. #31
That's just it tho, it would be cheaper for the Bluetooth vs 5 way stick + LCD

    a few FCU ideas

If you could explain your logic behind that I would be quite interested to hear it...

  33. #33
also, is the app across all platforms? and how would you lock it for fields that require it so people don't try and over-volume it?

  34. #34

    Switch

Place a switch on the fcu to turn on and off the transmitter. And since the APP is gonna be modded anyway. Why not have a ref section that detects open p* sources. Just an idea.

I'd sort of like something available to eliminate the need for as much wiring. I've been having trouble lately with my FCU shutting off on rare occasion when the wires are in a certain position. Somehow eliminating wiring issues like this would be nice. I know the issue is not with my FCUs wiring but with my JST to Large connector, but a special (and optional) attachable battery to the underside of an FCU is an intriguing idea.

You can always wire it into the grip if it's a big deal...
